The Evolution of the Christan Life:Sword of the Spirit

THE EVOLUTION OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE
THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT
"Learning to Fight and Win"
Text: Ephesians 6:17b
"And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."
Series Theme
The Christian life evolves from spiritual infancy to spiritual maturity as believers put on the whole Armor of God.
Sermon Proposition
The Word of God is the believer's offensive weapon. Spiritual maturity is learning not only to possess God's Word, but to use it effectively in spiritual warfare.
INTRODUCTION
  • The previous pieces of armor were primarily defensive.
  • The Sword of the Spirit is the believer's weapon.
  • God never intended Christians merely to survive battles.
  • God intends believers to walk in victory.
Key Statement
The Christian life evolves from merely owning a Bible to skillfully wielding God's Word.
I. THE SWORD WAS THE SOLDIER'S PRIMARY WEAPON
Ephesians 6:17
The Roman Sword
  • Short and sharp.
  • Designed for close combat.
  • Required training and practice.
  • Effective only when properly used.
Spiritual Application
Owning a Bible is not enough.
  • We must know it.
  • We must believe it.
  • We must apply it.
  • We must use it.
Key Thought
A Bible on the shelf cannot win a battle in the field.
II. THE WORD OF GOD IS A LIVING WEAPON
Hebrews 4:12
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword."
God's Word Is:
✓ Living
✓ Powerful
✓ Sharp
✓ Effective
The Word Can:
  • Save sinners.
  • Build faith.
  • Expose sin.
  • Strengthen believers.
  • Defeat deception.
  • Transform lives.
Key Thought
The enemy fears the Word of God because it exposes every lie he tells.
III. JESUS MODELED HOW TO USE THE SWORD
Matthew 4:1-11
Satan's Three Temptations
Attack #1 - Appetite
Jesus responded:
"It is written..."
Attack #2 - Identity
Jesus responded:
"It is written..."
Attack #3 - Worship
Jesus responded:
"It is written..."
Lesson
Jesus defeated temptation by standing on Scripture.
Key Thought
When Satan says, "Did God really say?" believers must answer, "It is written."
IV. THE WORD DEFEATS THE ENEMY'S LIES
Satan Lies About:
God
"God doesn't care."
Sin
"It isn't that serious."
You
"You'll never change."
The Future
"There is no hope."
God's Word Says:
  • God is faithful.
  • God forgives.
  • God provides.
  • God loves.
  • God keeps His promises.
Key Thought
The devil traffics in lies, but the Word traffics in truth.
V. JOSIAH AND THE LOST BOOK
2 Kings 22
The Condition of Judah
  • The Temple remained.
  • Religion continued.
  • God's Word was neglected.
What Happened
  • Hilkiah found the Book of the Law.
  • The Book was read to Josiah.
  • Conviction filled the king's heart.
  • Repentance followed.
  • Revival followed.
Lessons
  1. A neglected sword produces defeated people.
  2. Revival begins when the Word is opened.
  3. God's Word exposes sin.
  4. God's Word produces transformation.
Key Thought
The nation lost its way when it lost the Book and found revival when it found the Book.
VI. SPIRITUAL MATURITY REQUIRES KNOWING GOD'S WORD
Mature Believers:
Read the Word
Daily nourishment.
Study the Word
Deeper understanding.
Memorize the Word
Ready for battle.
Apply the Word
Living truth.
Psalm 119:11
"Thy word have I hid in mine heart..."
Key Thought
The effectiveness of the Sword depends on the familiarity of the soldier.
VII. HOW TO WIELD THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT
1. Read It Daily
Feed your soul.
2. Study It Deeply
Understand God's truth.
3. Memorize It Faithfully
Store Scripture in your heart.
4. Speak It Boldly
Declare God's promises.
5. Live It Consistently
Practice what you preach.
Key Thought
The Word works best in the life that obeys it.
THE EVOLUTION OF THE BELIEVER AND THE WORD

Stage 2: Understanding

Stage 3: Believing

CONCLUSION
The Sword of the Spirit:
  • Reveals truth.
  • Defeats lies.
  • Builds faith.
  • Produces victory.
Main Question
Am I merely carrying God's Word, or am I using God's Word?
INVITATION
  • Have I neglected Scripture?
  • Am I feeding on God's Word daily?
  • Do I know God's promises?
  • Am I using the Sword God has given me?
Prayer
"Lord, give me a hunger for Your Word. Help me read it, learn it, memorize it, speak it, and live it. Teach me to wield the Sword of the Spirit with wisdom and boldness so that I may stand victorious in every spiritual battle. Amen."
